Want to buy a used Toyota Supra Mk3 ? Here
are a few tips to keep in mind
** First of all, I want to tell you with
stress : NEVER EVER buy a used
Supra that doesn’t look good when you first see it. If you buy a crappy
Toyota Supra, whatever the price you pay, you will always curse the day you bought it ! It will litterally suck all the money out of your pockets! **

Although the Supra Mk3 is a very reliable car in my opinion.
------> Well, it really depends on how good the car was
treated by its first user(s). That will eventually determine its
reliability. This doesn’t sound like something new. I’m sure that’s an
advice to be followed whenever you buy ANY car. But, believe me, buying
a bad Supra will cost you many times the price of a good one in repairs.
Buying your Supra from some wild teenager would not be the best thing to
do. Mostly, these people just haven’t learned yet how to maintain such a
precious sports car in good condition. Also, many times they don’t have
the money to keep it in good shape.
My
idea is, if you buy an MkIII that is untainted and has been greatly
maintained by its previous owner, you will have years of unlimited
pleasure with your Supra.
Buying a
cheap Supra sounds really tempting. But, please, don't do it! There's a
reason why it's sold cheap.
Well, actually, there IS a way to get a good Supra at a very cheap
price. But, you must know where to find them. You can learn about that
here
------> Another thing to do is take the Supra MkIII that you
want to buy to an experienced mechanic, one you can trust. I cannot
stress this enough ! The first Supra I owned, I bought it just because I
saw it standing there and basically saying « I’m that nice car you were
looking for. I’m a Supra.... Buy me ! » . It was pretty far from my
home, so I didn’t know any mechanic in the neighbourhood. Really, I just
bought it because I trusted the car dealer !!! (how dumb is that,
trusting a car dealer you don’t know yet ?!)
Well, believe me, I still curse the day I bought that Supra. I lost a
lot of money in that car, in just a year time. And I had to sell it for
less than a third of what I paid for it.
This tip, if not taken too lightly, will literally save you money BIG
TIME ! Believe me.
------> A very interesting thing to know also is, you
got to know that you will have to spend a fair amount of money on your
car ! And I’m not talking $5/month, I’m talking rather
$50 - 100/month.
(that’s a minimum average) This will be for tyres, basic repairs, oil...
And new parts of course, if you like to tune up your Supra.
Believe me, if you get a used Toyota Supra ’86-’92 , this is indeed a
good average to bear in mind.
Don't
forget we are talking about a car that is around 17 years old !
Yes, it does cost some money to get an exclusive car like a Toyota Supra
Mk3 But, in the end, the pleasure you get from driving it, is really
worth the money and the effort.
------> Periodically replacing some rubber hoses or
gaskets, will also be necessary. As rubber dries and shrinks. And this
car has many of those hoses.
------>
As for
the body, bear in mind that all cars rust. Well, as long as they are
made of steel, they will. Undoubtly. But, they do rust in different
areas. For example, some cars are known for rusty hatches. I believe
this was a big problem with the MkII. But, this is not the case with the
Supra MkIII. Places to look for rust here, are on the rear wheel wells,
and rear shock towers. If those are rusty, you are in for a very pricy
repair !
Watch out for body work ! Body work is a very delicate thing. If it is
done properly, body work is fine. But, people often don’t do it right,
and use filler to fix the rusty places. This is cheaper for them, but
it’s amateuristic work.
------> Look for BHG issues :
Very important, and a big problem with Mk3’s (BHG
: Blown Head Gasket)
-
look at the back of the oil cap for signs of foamy looking oil. Also
inspect the oil itself to see if it’s foamy. If it’s foamy indeed, this
is a sign of water jacket to oil passage BHG.
-
combustion chamber to water jacket type BHG : do a block test, to test
the coolant. This way you can determine if there are any combustion
gasses present. Such a tester is fairly cheap, and a great tool for you
if you are planning to buy a Toyota Supra Mk3
